La Casa Roja

La Casa Roja is a multi-level home with the feel of a boutique hotel located on the hillside of Cerro El Almacén on the western side of Zihuatanejo's bay. It can be rented in its entirety or as two separate apartment suites. Both apartments have 2 bedrooms with a king-size and twin beds, full kitchen and a terrace. The upper apartment has one bathroom while the lower one has two. The lower level also has a small private pool.

This vacation lodging faces eastward overlooking Zihuatanejo Bay. Sunrises are colorful and quick at our latitude, and by the time the day starts to turn hot, the sun has passed overhead and the house is cooled by the shade of the hill. Refreshing ocean breezes and ceiling fans generally suffice to keep the house comfortable. The gentle sound of the waves on the nearby rocky shore makes for a relaxing ambiance, especially for siesta time and sleeping at night.

Downtown Zihuatanejo is within easy walking distance as are many excellent restaurants and several beaches. Taxis can be called to the house, and public transportation in the form of combis can be found about a block away.

La Casa Roja is LGBTQ friendly.

Donna and Tim are your hosts. We live here over half the year residing in the very top floor, so we're available if you need us though we will respect your privacy. We've been coming to Zihuatanejo for over a decade and we try to do our part to help the community by being involved in the SailFest (February) and the GuitarFest (March), raising funds to help disadvantaged children to get an education.

Zihuatanejo

The city of Zihuatanejo surrounds a sheltered bay on the Costa Grande of the state of Guerrero on Mexico's Pacific Coast.

Zihuatanejo is a vibrant community of mostly working families that includes fishermen, artisans and farmers as well as the people who own and work in the vacation lodgings, restaurants, shops, markets and the myriad of other services that sustain a small city. It's a place where strangers and neighbors still greet each other warmly on the streets, and where the daily comida y siesta from 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. is still a revered local tradition. The people are extremely friendly and helpful. You'll find that many people here speak at least some English, and they are happy to help you to learn to speak Spanish.

People from afar have been visiting Zihuatanejo for its natural beauty and near-perfect tropical weather since long before the arrival of the Spaniards. In recent decades, foreigners and people from Mexico's inland towns and cities have been coming to vacation, to work and to retire.

Several golden sandy beaches surround the blue sheltered waters of the bay. Usually the water is calm enough for even novice swimmers.

The more touristy development of Ixtapa with its high-rise hotels and condominiums is only about 5 minutes away by car.

What Our Guests Say

We spent November 20th - December 22, 2023 at Casa Roja. It is a lovely accommodation with great views of Zihuatanejo bay and beaches. It is located close to bus stop and the pier. Ixtapa and the airport are only a bus ride away. It is a great location within walking distance to everywhere in Zihua and has great restaurants just steps away.

The accommodations are lovely with traditional finishings, all the necessities to make your stay comfortable are available, and great housekeeping staff.

The hosts are on site and extremely accommodating. They ensure you are aware/invited to social events within the community and are available anytime to ensure you have a great stay.

If you are a dog lover you will be in heaven, if not, no problem, dogs are extremely well behaved.

Highly recommend Casa Roja. The hosts have become friends who we will keep in contact with.

I rented the lower suite at Casa Roja, owned by Tim and Donna Melville for five weeks beginning November 28 2023. My communications around booking were handled by Donna with fast turn around. Financial transactions were completed with skill and ease. At one point I had to cancel two weeks of my trip and again, the refund was calculated and remitted without problems. I arrived with my daughter at Casa Roja and was immediately enchanted with the whimsical decor. Staff were courteous and approachable. Donna and Tim were always available to answer questions or make recommendations to help us segue into the community. Amenities like air conditioning and appliances worked without problem and the pool was larger than appeared in photos and an absolute delight to cool off after outings. Accommodations were close to town and beaches however far enough away so that we could enjoy privacy. I highly, highly recommend Casa Roja and am already thinking about returning next year!

From the time we booked, the communication with Donna was extraordinary. She and Tim were a wealth of information, as we had not been to Zihua before. They shared information about the area, experiences they've had living there and what was happening while we were visiting. The property is amazing and just what we were looking for to have an "authentic" experience in this wonderful town. Donna and Tim were very attentive while not being intrusive. We highly recommend this property if you are looking for a place that is true to its community and the local way of life. We were truly blessed by their hospitality and knowledge. Definately on the list of places to visit again!!

We recently had the pleasure of staying at Casa Roja. WOW! The location is perfect! Very walkable to centro yet just far enough away for some peace and quiet. There are a couple very good restaurants right up the street and the neighborhood dogs (who often hang out around the place) along with their own dog, are friendly and sweet. The views of the bay from every level of this home are breathtaking and the swimming pools are a nice respite from the Zihua heat. Tim and Donna have thought of everything and have equipped the place with anything you may need to make your stay as comfortable as possible. There is no shortage of hot water with great pressure! The AC units in the bedrooms are on point for a nice restful night of sleep. Not only have Tim and Donna made this place a lovely sanctuary, but they themselves are wonderful people with big hearts and loving souls. Their place reflects that! We HIGHLY recommend Casa Roja. Do yourself a favor and BOOK IT!

This charming, one-of-a-kind boutique accommodation offers guests a delightful, remarkable stay. Tim and Donna are the gracious proprietors. They live onsite and have attended to every detail from the fully appointed kitchen to the colorful Mexican tile counters and the mélange of Mexican folk art and contemporary art that decorate the walls. We rented the two-bedroom, two-bath unit which has a private pool for refreshing dips. Lounge chairs extend the living space onto the deck where one can enjoy the expansive view of this vibrant bay. The apartment is bright and airy, quiet and private. Each room is painted a vibrant, cheerful color and whimsical wall murals provide a feast for the eyes. The apartment is centrally located, walks along the beautiful Malecon, exploring the bustling central market, and enjoying fabulous evening music entertainment are within easy walking distance. Bikes and kayaks are available for expanded sightseeing. Honestly, La Casa Roja is a wonderful retreat and an unforgettable vacation experience, home away from home... in paradise.

Hi Donna and Tim,

I just wanted to say thank you for making our stay so fabulous! We had a very relaxing time staying at La Casa Roja. We absolutely loved the size and colorful nature of the unit. The murals are fabulous! We thoroughly enjoyed the spacious balcony from where we could watch all the action in the bay and around the marina. Not to forget the beautiful sunrises as well! A great way to start the day. The location was great as we could easily walk to whichever beach we wanted to explore for the day and rarely used a taxi. Tim and Donna are fantastic hosts!! They made us feel a part of the community and kept us informed of all the Sailfest activity as well as numerous musical events in Zihuatanejo and surrounding area. Any questions we had were always quickly answered. We can't wait to return to the "Red House" next year!!

Donna and Tim's place is absolutely gorgeous! We rented both the bottom and upper unit as we had family that traveled with us. My husband and I stayed in the bottom unit with the pool. The pool was amazing! We enjoyed the outdoor area as they had a nice table and comfortable chairs outside. Donna and Tim were very inviting and made us feel at home. They have an amazing housekeeper Gloria who even brought us some delicious food (I loved her homemade donuts).

My daughter and her husband stayed in the upper unit and enjoyed it very much. It was very spacious and had an amazing view. You do get a better breeze up in that unit. Donna and Tim have 3 wonderful doggies that we absolutely loved having around. One of them is a 3 legged, deaf doggie named Blanco and he was so precious. Both units were very clean. Our bed was very comfortable. The kitchen was equipped with everything you might need. Smart Tv was great as I am an early riser before everyone else so I was able to watch some Netflix. They always had a supply of water to drink which was really nice. It is close to town and close to 2 amazing restaurants that we went to often. We stayed 3 weeks and it was like home. We would stay again for sure!

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at La Casa Roja! The view was amazing. It immediately felt like home. We were able to have some guests spend the night for a small stipend. The pool proved to be a life saver after a day in the heat. We can't say enough about the hosts! Extremely friendly and helpful. And did not intrude. We will definitely consider staying there again next time we go to Zihuatanejo.

Kind regards,
Guy and Shine
